The latest news in Hollywood has it that multiple-award winning actor, Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way Productions is teaming with Paramount Pictures for a live-action take on the 90s popular environmentally-minded animated series called ‘Captain Planet.’

‘Captain Planet’ was a very popular animation series (or cartoons as we used to call it) in Ghana and any child who grew up in the 90s, especially in the city and had the privilege of having a TV set in his/her house or could visit a neighbour who had a TV set, till date, holds fond memories of the series.

Perhaps, one of the things about the series that enamoured many Ghanaians to watch, was the name of one of the characters, Kwame – which is a name originally from Ghana (used largely by the Akan tribe).

Ghanaian actor and environmentalist, Kobina Sam, has shared his thoughts on this new movie project, by admonishing Leonardo and his Hollywood crew to come to Ghana and cast a Ghanaian to play the role or the Kwame character.

“At least one good turn, deserves another. It will be a great opportunity for Ghana if they truly cast someone from here.” Asked teasingly how he will feel in case they come and cast him for that role, he said amidst giggling, “Well, I’m an environmentalist.

“I believe in the protection of our environment from harm and that is the concept behind ‘Captain Planet’ – I got to know of that not long ago. So I will be glad to feature in something I share a philosophy with – plus acting-wise, you know I’m cut for it.”
