A member of the Ghana Oscar 2020 Nomination Committee, Mr. George Bosompim, has disclosed to Presspeep.com that only five movies were submitted to their tables for shortlisting, after calling on all Ghanaian filmmakers to submit their films.
Following the guidelines of the Academy, the Ghana Oscar 2020 Nomination Committee is tasked to select from open submissions one film to represent Ghana at the Oscars come Feb, 2020, Hollywood. The committee watches the submitted movies and select those that meet the requirements and pass them on to the Oscar Committee in California.
For an update after the deadline (20th June, 2019) for submission of films to the committee for consideration, Mr. Bosompim discloses that only five movies reached them and out of that, “two shortlisted for secret voting.”
He added that “most of us have voted. The chair Prof. Linus Abraham is leading the process. It will continue till September when the nominees committee in Hollywood will bring out the 10 nominated films for the international feature film category.”
Asked if there’s hope for Ghana to get nomination in the Oscars come next year, he positively stated, “I think so. But all these things. You need to lobby as well. So you need people in that circles in Hollywood as well.”
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in 2017 and 2018, approved a 14-member committee to select a film to represent Ghana at the 90th and 91st Oscars. Unfortunately, Ghana could not submit a movie on the back of the submitted movies’ inability to meet the required standards.
The committee, which has since been reconstituted, is now poised for action to get the best film to represent Ghana in the International Feature Film category at the Oscars come 2020.
