The 72nd New Year School and Conference has been opened by the President of Ghana, Nana Akufo-Addo at the Great Hall of the University of Ghana, Legon. The annual event which is usually a week long, had almost been cancelled due to the infectious nature of COVID-19. However, it was shortened to a two-day event themed: “Building Ghana in the Face of Global Health Crises.” It will come to an end on Wednesday, 20 January, 2021.
During the course of the event, President Akufo-Addo highlighted the fact that the committee which had been put together to make a suitable decision on the deployment of a trustworthy COVID-19 vaccine in the country has brought its work to an end. This will give the government the opportunity to start making agreements with COVID-19 manufacturing companies across the globe.
“Through the advances of science we now have vaccines that are already being administered in some countries that could help control and eventually end the pandemic. The Committee formed by the government to recommend the appropriate decision on COVID-19 vaccines has completed its work, enabling the government to begin discussions with vaccine-manufacturing companies with the goal of ordering suitable doses of the vaccine for use in Ghana. Details of this will be announced very soon,” the President said.
The event, which is the largest program of the School of Continuing and Distance Education of the College of Education of the host University is usually graced by the presence of high profile personalities throughout the country.
