Ghanaian Tourism and Destination Manager, CEO of Kaya Tours Ghana cum Broadcaster, popularly known as Abeiku Santana, has averred that tourism, is not just meant for entertainment as largely believed so – and has challenged Ghanaians it’s time to begin paying attention to the economic factors that boost tourism for a nation.
“Tourism is not just an Entertainment” he said – adding, “It is a socio-economic activity. Let us be mindful of the importance and value it brings to us. As we celebrate the ‘World Tourism Day’ on theme “Sustainable Tourism a tool for Development.”
Enumerating some factors fighting against Ghana’s tourism potentials – of becoming one of the best tourism destinations in Africa, he stated univocally: “Our beaches are dirty, our smelling chocked gutters, the open defecation, filth around our attraction sights, poor customer services, lack of professionalism, inadequate investment and infrastructure, weak destination marketing, promotion and branding.”
He continued by giving a little education on tourism – “Tourism is a sector with these notable industries under it; transport and aviation, food and beverages, hospitality, telecommunications, music and creative arts etc. For Ghana’s tourism to be competitive in Africa, all hands must come on deck.”
He challenged Ghanaians, by reminding that “The 4th GDP earner is a sleeping giant. Let’s compete South Africa, Kenya, Egypt, Morocco, and Zambia. For our tourism to be sustainable it must be economical, socially, culturally and environmental. Happy World Tourism Day.”
